March 2005 Tour



The 2005 tours will take place before and after the 3rd International Huntington Clivia Symposium & Show. The "Pre Symposium Tour" will be three one-day trips in the Los Angeles area. The "Post Symposium Tour" will be one four-day trip north of Los Angeles.


The following pricing is based on 40 tour attendees. If less than 40 persons sign up for either tour then the price will change for that tour. The cost of meals is not included in the pricing. Attendees will be responsible for paying for their own food.

Pricing per person for the "Pre Symposium Tour" is $55.00US which includes transportation and entry fees.

Pricing per person for the "Post Symposium Tour" is $373.00US which includes transportation, entry fees, and three overnight accommodations in double occupancy room. If you will be sharing your room with someone and paying for this tour together then the second persons cost will only be $113.00US .

Pre Symposium Tour:
  • March 23, 2005 Wednesday -
    • 9:00 AM Meet at the Huntington Library to board transportation and drive to Nuccio's Nursery in Altadena. Tour our nations single largest Camellia nursery including historic collection of Vic. Daniels yellow Miniata.
    • 2:00 PM Meet back at bus to drive to Descanso Gardens. Light hiking to view Southern California\’s finest mature collection of planted Camellia along with authentic Japanese garden as well as other attractions.
    • 5:00 PM Meet back at transportation to return to Huntington Library.
  • March 24, 2005 Thursday -
    • 9:00 AM Meet at the Huntington Library to board transportation and drive to UC Irvine Arboretum to view Jim Comstock's collection.
    • 1:00 PM Meet back at bus to drive to Joe Dana's planted collection, all set in a natural tropical setting, in Monrovia.
    • 5:00 PM Meet back at transportation to return to Huntington Library.
  • March 25, 2005 Friday -
    • 9:00 AM Meet at the Huntington Library to board transportation and drive to Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Gardens. Tram will be available at first part of tour. Self guided tour after. One of Los Angeles\’s finest public Arboretums. Wide walkways to view, antique Queen Anne Cottage, local native Indian displays as well as large collection of sub-tropical palms and tropical green houses in a natural planted setting.
    • 1:00 PM Meet back at bus to drive back the Huntington Botanical Gardens to view the gardens and tour or help set up.

  • March 26, 2005 Saturday - 3rd International Huntington Clivia Symposium
  • March 27, 2005 Sunday - 3rd International Huntington Clivia Symposium


Post Symposium Tour:
  • March 28, 2005 Monday -
    • 8:30 AM Meet at the Huntington Library to board transportation and drive to Hope Ranch near Santa Barbara.
    • 11:00 AM Light hike to view naturalized clivia stands of Clivia Miniata growing wild on hillsides outside of Santa Barbara.
    • 12:30 PM Meet back at bus to drive to The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden.
    • 12:45 PM This is truly one of Santa Barbara\’s greatest hidden treasures. Features, 65 acres of easy to walk trails, viewing native trees, shrubs, cactus and spring wildflowers in bloom, all in a natural setting in the foothills of Santa Barbara.
    • 2:00 PM Meet back at bus to drive to Dave Conway's Garden for brown bag lunch, and to view and purchase plants.
    • 5:00 PM Meet back at bus to drive to overnight accommodations at the Madonna Inn (known for its uniquely styled rooms) in San Luis Obispo.
    • 7:00 PM arrive at the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo. Madonna Inn has been a landmark on California\’s central coast for over forty five years! No two rooms alike with uniquely decorated theme rooms. Includes: café and pastry shop, Gold rush steak house, the Silver Bar cocktail lounge with dancing or shop in three specialty stores. Indulge yourself with a little pampering in the Whispering Hills Massage Center. This is a First Class Resort.


  • March 29, 2005 Tuesday -
    • 8:30 AM Meet at the transportation and drive to Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa.
    • 9:00 AM This mission contains original mission altar, old padre quarters and display of Chumash Indian vessels. This mission was established in 1793 and is our fifth mission in California with much the same as built.
    • 10:00 AM Meet back at bus to drive to the Paso Robles Inn.
    • 10:45 AM Wine tasting. Paso Robles Inna hosts thirty wine tasting rooms from award winning local wineries.
    • 12:00 PM Meet back at bus to drive to San Lorenzo Park in King City.
    • 1:00 PM The Monterrey County Agricultural and Rural Life Museum has displays of early California agrarian society. Antique Spreckles house as well as exhibit barn, blacksmith shop, antique irrigation building and King City Depot.
    • 2:30 PM Meet back at bus to drive to overnight accommodations at the Red Roof Inn in Watsonville.
    • 4:00 PM arrive at the Red Roof Inn in Watsonville.


  • March 30, 2005 Wednesday -
    • 8:30 AM Meet at the transportation and drive to Monterey Bay Nursery.
    • 9:00 AM View and purchase plants at the Monterey Bay Nursery.
    • 12:30 PM Meet back at the transportation and drive to Joseph Solomone's Plant Horizons to view and purchase plants at the nursery.
    • Overnight accommodations at the same Red Roof Inn in Watsonville.


  • March 31, 2005 Thursday -
    • 8:30 AM Meet at the transportation and drive to Mission San Antonio in Jolon.
    • 10:30 AM Arrive at the Mission San Antonio which was established in 1791 (our 13th mission). It has been completely restored by the Hearst Foundation
    • 11:30 AM Meet at the transportation and drive to EOS Estate Winery in Paso Robles
    • 1:00 PM Visit the EOS Estate Winery a world class winery set in a classical Mediterranean setting. Self guided tour.
    • 2:00 PM Meet at the transportation and drive to Santa Barbara.
    • 4:30 PM Possible two additional clivia growers in Santa Barbara.
    • 5:30 PM Meet at the transportation and drive to Huntington Library.
    • 7:30 PM The tour is finished.
